Kingdom Wise?

images (57)I would not have you ignorant, brothers, the apostle Paul wrote on several occasions.

In this vein, here’s an email I received last week from an ETS member who attended my theological paper presentation in March and is now reading “Unraveling the End: A balanced scholarly synthesis of four competing and conflicting end-time views.” (Used with permission)

Amazingly, a few months ago, I undertook to more deeply understand what Jesus meant about the Kingdom of God. I poured over my home theological library, tore into my numerous Wheaton Theology course notes from various classes, and bought a number books by historically recognized writers (A.M. Hunter, Cullman, Dodd, Morris etc.). I also bought a contemporary book by R. Alan Streett “Heaven on Earth” which I was hopeful for some meat, but was disappointed by Streett’s emotive Kingdom issues rather than experientially affirming Kingdom realities.

Now John, your insights on “How much of the Kingdom do we currently have?” awakened me to something I had not considered. You are right in that each of the 4 views have a different take on Kingdom realization. Eschatology and Kingdom reality are inextricably and indivisibly linked.

No wonder churches don’t teach on these levels as leadership is Biblically, Theologically, exegetically and hermeneutically (and sadly) ill-equipped.  If I were a Pastor and did not know this depth, I would not want you coming into my church (small c) and teaching at this level. It would make me look like a fool and I’d likely brand you an apostate, heretic or something to defer my ignorance and keep me at the helm.

Your question and follow up response regarding the already / not yet reality to the lecturing professor caused me to laugh out loud.  When Jesus affirms the Kingdom, why do we not affirm it today?  Great point John.  Great point!

I’ll not go on further. Only to repeat your words, “American culture no longer values the Church the way it did.” (p35). The visible church (small c) has absconded from its headship (Jesus’) demands for the Church (large c).  Eschatology matters.

Am absolutely enjoying the read and learning. Thanks.

So are you ignorant or wise re the central teaching of Jesus – the kingdom of God?
